Over 1700 community members of all ages participate in the Community Art Center’s year-round Community Programs. The events and projects use arts-based activities to connect our community, increase civic engagement of Cambridge residents and provide a platform for the stories and artwork of our youth, are organized by our youth, and/or work to strengthen the communities and families of which our youth are a part.
Our Community Programs include:
Special Events – Our year-round arts events create spaces for community members to come together, explore, learn and celebrate and include the outdoor summer events Arts Interactive and Change for Peace Art and Music Series, SACC Final Show and TMP Teen Night and our Do It Your Damn Self!! National Youth Film Festival.
Public Art - The Community Art Center's public art work focuses on creating murals and installations that feature the artistry of our youth and celebrate their lives, stories and community. Working in collaboration with local mural artists, Art Center youth have completed murals commissioned by local corporations and institutions such as Novartis Pharmacueticals, Alexandria Real Estate Properties, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Cambridge Housing Authority. Our largest projects have been presented as a part of the Port Stories Public Art Project: Home Port which combines neighborhood history with current stories to present murals and public art celebrations in order to bring together the people who live, work and create in the Port/Area IV Neighborhood of Cambridge.
*Port Stories Public Art Project: Home Port is funded by Fund for the Arts, a public art program of the New England Foundation for the Arts.
Family Engagement – Adults and teens from our Port neighborhood and beyond are invited to participate in our evening programs designed to build the health and wellness of families. Our classes for adults include Capoeira, late-night weekend basketball for teens and Art and Wellness Fridays featuring a rotating menu of yoga, zumba and jewlery making workshops for parents along with child care and snacks for children.
Community Events and Partners - In addition to our own programming, we are pleased to partner with other community groups, artists, and organizations to provide classes, gatherings, and other events in our space. Partnerships include:
