Food Justice Mural
Spring 2021
Location: Starlight Square (Temporary)
Partners: Central Square Business Improvement District, Cambridge Dept. of Human Services.
Lead Artists: Tarik Bartell & Jack O’Hearn
Upon exploring the many facets of social justice, teens chose to focus this project specifically on food justice. The idea was to create a mural on a portable wall (with wheels) that was fun, interactive, and educational, and which could live in the temporary outdoor venue, Starlight Square. For the mural, teens contributed sketches and ideas and discussed how the lead artist could arrange them together. With the completed mural on one side of the wall, teens decided to paint the opposite side with chalkboard paint and invite event-goers to contribute to the conversation around food justice. For the zine, teens created drawings and poems and paired them with quotes and educational information such as the locations of community fridges throughout the greater Boston area. Zines were distributed to the public alongside the mural unveiling at the season opening event in 2021.
