For the D12 Alewife mural, teens in the program learned about abstract art and its different uses and approaches spanning many cultures throughout history. They also learned key elements of design and explored ways of expressing ideas or emotions through the use of shapes and colors. They then worked as a team to design and install this fun, playful, and energetic mural. Teens were also tasked with naming the area and designing a logo that could be used in the mural. They chose to keep the city’s designation of District 12, shortened to D12, and pair it with Alewife, which is the closest transit station.
